'Nevermore' (2010) and 'Elusive' (2010) (Both drawn with fineliner)
Whilst I was studying a Art Foundation Diploma at Yale College, Wrexham, one of my art tutors kept on going about observational drawing. Of course at the beginning, being nagged about it was a pain. You just wanted to get on with your work, with deadlines looming like an ever constant shadow. Also, I didn't have the best friendship with one of my art tutors (but then again. Who has?), with her only words to describe artwork as 'interesting' and that was pretty much it.

Luckily, one of my other tutors (who was a fine artist) encouraged me to take up observational drawing. The majority of this work took place during my Final Major Project as well as life drawing classes during the second term. Below, are just two of the drawings ('Nevermore' was created during my Final Major Project, whilst 'Elusive' was drawn after the diploma finished).

I showed a small journal inc. 'Nevermore' to my fine art tutor and my Visual Communications tutor (you get a lot of tutors at Yale!). They were so impressed, that they created a full blown A1 copy of another raven drawing that I did in my sketchbook. It came as a surprise to me, since it was only a day or so before the exhibition took place and it was this that encouraged me to take my observational drawings further as an additional form of drawing practice while at Swansea Metropolitan University (where I'm currently studying and also carrying on with my life drawing sessions!)
